ABOUT THE PROJECT / why

Why this dialect?

By Tamara Obrovac, author of the project

Because I am a musician, a composer and a vocalist for whom verbal expression is an integral part of musical expression, I took the sound and melody of the idiom as a starting point for my discovery of other cultural aspects of the Istrian dialects. I have come to realize that these dialects’ different speech melodies and sounds carry in them deep emotional meanings and inspire me to generate different musical melodies. Through the creative process, I became aware of the remarkable dialectal, musical and cultural richness of Istria, the homeland I love and cherish in all its aspects. Its richness and beauty provide nourishment for my soul and I pay tribute to them in this way, with this work, once more.

This is the third DVD in the Panphonia DVD series. It is devoted to the Labinjonska cakavica, one of the most interesting and oldest indigenous Istrian dialects spoken in and around the town of Labin. As a musician who pays attention to the very sound of the idiom, I find the Labin chacavian to be particularly interesting because of the pronounced rhythm of its words and its sentence structures, and so this DVD is permeated with short words, phrases, proverbs and verses that we have, with great help from the poet Roberta Razzi, collected in Labin and its surroundings from the friendly and extremely hospitable people of Labin. The recorded material is presented in the form of an interactive multimedia film with which we shall try to communicate the beauty and musicality of another interesting and special Istrian dialect.

ABOUT THE PROJECT AND MULTIMEDIA / how

Why a multimedia project

Multimedia seemed to be an obvious tool to present such an archaic subject as a dialect in order to make it, through the use of modern digital technology, visually interesting and virtually interactive. Through the use of various media and means of expression, from the poetic to the documentary, this approach tries to capture the multiple meanings and complexities of the term “dialect,” which for me personally is a cultural phenomenon and a phenomenon of communication.

The fundamental idea behind this project was to present the spoken, written and musical dialectal tradition of Istria to the modern lover of music and art and, at the same time, contribute to the preservation of archaic Istrian dialects and cultures, which represent an important part of Istrian cultural heritage.
